MACAO, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- The number of inbound travelers to Macao dropped 85 percent year on year in 2020 to 5.92 million, the special administrative region's (SAR) Public Security Police Force have said.

The total number of inbound and outbound travelers dropped 64.2 percent in 2020 over the previous year to 69.55 million, which was attributed to the impact of COVID-19, according to the police force.

The highest daily record of cross-border visitor flow in 2020 was registered on Jan. 18 at 638,284 people and the lowest was recorded on March 28 at 3,794 people, the police force said.

As the COVID-19 situation basically stabilized in the Chinese mainland and Macao in the middle of 2020, Macao's tourism authority has been actively promoting the SAR as a safe and quality destination in accord with the reinstatement of travel permit issuance for mainland residents.

In December 2020, the daily average of cross-border visitor flow rose to 299,000, including 210,000 inbound visitors. However, compared with the same period of 2019, the figures dropped 44.9 percent and 78.5 percent respectively.

On New Year's Eve, Macao registered the highest daily record of visitor arrivals over the last 11 months at 30,796.

The police force said it would continue making efforts to guarantee smooth border checks while stepping up epidemic prevention and control. Enditem
