WASHINGTON, April 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese tennis player Wang Xinyu lost to Sloane Stephens of the United States 6-2, 6-4 in the opening round of the Volvo Car Open held in Charleston, the United States on Tuesday.

Impatient rallying and 12 unforced errors saw Wang drop the first set in a flash, but in the second set, Wang started to deliver better shots and was able to sustain longer rallies.

However, Stephens was too consistent from the back of the court. The former US Open champion, now ranked world No. 57, broke twice to lead 5-2.

It was only with her back to the wall that Wang began to play her best. Suddenly hitting cleanly and rattling off rapid-fire winners, she began to dominate from all corners of the court. The two-time junior Grand Slam doubles champion's decision to come forward to the net also paid off.

With Stephens serving for the match at 5-4, Wang staved off three match points, two with searing forehand winners. But with the momentum switching again, Stephens played her own best point of the match, finding a backhand winner after an extended rally, and minutes later sealed victory with a timely ace.

Elsewhere, Leylah Annie Fernandez of Canada swept past Zhang Shuai of China 6-3, 6-1. Enditem
